Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini On The Word of God in the Life and the Mission of the Church!
Pope publishes Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini
On The Word of God in the Life and the Mission of the Church
As is customary after a Synod of Bishops, the Holy Father has released the official document that sets forth the Church’s magisterium or teaching on the topic discussed at the said Synod, in this case, the 2008 Synod of Bishops on The Word of God in the Life and the Mission of the Church.
It is called Verbum Domini – the Apostolic Exhortation, presented today at the Holy See Press Office, which contains the contents of the 2008 Synod on the Word of God held at the Vatican. In the extensive and thorough text, Benedict XVI recalls the centrality and importance of the Bible in past and present culture. Regarding the life of the Church, liturgy, and the education of children and adults, the Apostolic Exhortation contains several suggestions which emerged from the Synod of Bishops. It calls for the promotion of reading and personal meditation, verifications with the Magisterium, the development of the Lectio Divina, and to make the Word leaven for the renewal of the world. The first part deals with current problems from biblical interpretation and connected themes to an awareness of the universal symbolism of the Bible itself.(http://www.h2onews.org)
I look forward to reading and implementing this document in my personal life and ministry – and I encourage you to do the same.
“I would like the work of the synod to have a real effect on the life of the church: on our personal relationship with the sacred Scriptures, on their interpretation in the liturgy and catechesis, and in scientific research so that the Bible may not be simply a word from the past, but a living and timely word.” (Pope Benedict XVI)
You may wish to make it part of your daily spiritual reading and to ask the Lord in prayer how you too can share the Word of God, written and spoken, with so many who have yet to come to know Jesus Christ, the Word who became flesh and dwelt among, in a personal, life-giving, and life-changing manner in the Church He founded for our good and salvation.
