God is rich in mercy – Dive into the ocean of mercy!

Memorial of St. Faustina Kowalska

Divine Mercy 1

In Dives in misericordia, Pope John Paul II spoke beautifully about the mercy of God and the God of mercy, declaring that mercy is God’s greatest attribute.  (Cf. http://www.vatican.va/edocs/ENG0215/_INDEX.HTM.)

Sacred Scripture is filled with references to the mercy of God.  Christ speaks numerous times of the tender mercies of God.  He beautifully describes the depths of the Father’s mercy in the Parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15, in which a son asks his father for his part of the inheritance (though his father had not yet died!) and leaves home to squander his inheritance in loose living.  When he loses all he has and famine strikes the land, the young man is forced to hire himself out to care for pigs.  Starving and far from home, he at last comes to his senses and decides to break from sin and return home.  As he is rehearsing his confession, his father catches sight of him and runs toward his son with love!  As the young man begins his confession (“Father, I have sinned against God and against you…”), His father embraces him with joy and forgiveness, declaring that a party must begin, for his son was dead and is alive again, his beloved son was lost and now is found!  (Cf. http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/index.shtml)

This is our story. This parable is about God our Father and each one of us.  Our Father in Heaven is so desirous of our return home, that He sent His own Son, our older brother Jesus, in search of our lost souls!  We have a way home now!

If you have strayed away, come home.  If you know someone who has strayed from God and Church, invite them to come home.  No sin is greater than God’s great mercy, and that the greatest sinner has the greatest right to His mercy, is what Our Lord revealed to St. Faustina Kowalska in His Divine Mercy revelations.  So we have every reason to want to run home and be embraced by love, lest we waste away far from God! (Cf. http://www.catholic-forum.com/churches/cathteach/divinemercy1.htm

Christ gave us a special place where He bestows the fullness of His loving mercy and healing balm: the Sacrament of His mercy, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, of Penance.  Avail yourself of this marvelous Sacrament regularly.  Confess to your Father in Heaven, as the prodigal son, that you have sinned against Him and wish to come home.  Allow God to clothe you and restore your relationship with Him.

Dive into the ocean of God’s immeasurable mercy!  Find relief there for the pain of sin and separation.  Invite others to do the same.
