Holy Saturday – the day the earth seemed empty of God

Holy Saturday – The day the earth seemed empty of God, the saddest day of the year for me, a day of recollection and prayer, of retreating till the Alleluia is once more sung!

From an ancient homily on Holy Saturday:

“Something strange is happening – there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep… and he has raised up all who have slept since the world began… and hell trembles. He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep… bearing the cross… (saying): Awake, o sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. I am your God… I order you, O sleeper, to awake… rise from the dead… Rise up… Rise… For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and was crucified in a garden. See on my face the spittle… See there the marks of the blows I received… On my back see the marks of the scourgings… See my hands nailed firmly to a tree…

Rise… I will restore you… The bridal chamber is adorned, the banquet is ready, the eternal dwelling places are prepared, the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The kingdom of heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity.”

May we wake with Christ tonight, on the Easter Vigil – the great vigil of all vigils, the night of all nights! –  and rise to new life, filled with the adornment of righteousness and the treasures of grace which God gives to all who wish to be clothed in His holiness. May the tabernacle of your soul, emptied of selfishness and sin this Easter Triduum, be filled again with the Presence and Power of Christ the Lord!
