iEvangelize? How about you? Pope calls for new evangelizers

The Vatican held a gathering for the New Evangelization this weekend. It concluded with a Mass for New Evangelizers presided over by Pope Benedict XVI.

The Pope announced a “Year of Faith” to begin on October 11, 2012 (yes, 10/11/12!), the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of Blessed John Paul II’s publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It will end on November 24, 2013 – the Solemnity of Christ The King.

Why a “Year of Faith”? The Holy Father speaks of a “profound crisis of faith that has affected many people” left searching for answers. The Pope wrote in “Porta Fidei” (“Door of Faith”), the Motu Propio announcing this special year of grace: “Ever since the start of my ministry as Successor of Peter, I have spoken of the need to rediscover the journey of faith so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ.”

It seems to me that the Lord is speaking through His Church about His top priorities for this time with these recent developments:

  • …Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization
  • …October 2012 Synod of Bishops on The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith
  • …Year of Faith (2012-2013)

The message is clear!

The time is now!

The new evangelizers are among us! We’re it!

As I wrote over a decade ago and again four years ago, If not us, who? If not now, when? (

Let’s take up the call to carry out a fruitful and new evangelization even to the ends of the earth, through which family life, human relations, education, academia, politics, legislation, social life, foreign policy, immigration worldwide, health care, media, entertainment… indeed, every sector of society and of human life are deeply touched and affected, as Blessed John Paul II insisted and as was declared anew this weekend by Pope Benedict XVI, by Archbishop Fisichella, the head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization, and by the presence and presenters at the gathering.

Let’s be evangelizers! Let’s be saints!

iEvangelize. How about you?
