You are the love of my life!

The love of my life!

In today’s Gospel, Jesus Christ poses a crucial, life-changing, and life-giving question to His disciples:

“Who do you say that I am?” (Mk 8:27-33)

Who is Jesus for you? My answer is unequivocal:

You are the love of my life! You have been the love of my life for quite some time: consciously since the age of 15 – though You, Lord and Love of my life, have had me on Your heart and mind since before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4)… and most certainly as You knit me in my mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13)… and in a special way since the day of my Infant Baptism when You claimed me as Your own, gave me new life, and I was born again from water and the Spirit (John 3).

The love of my life… Yes, no one else will do as Eternal Lord and Everlasting Love.

It reminds me of my friend Jean and her husband Pat. He was courting her and she was uncertain this was “the one.” I didn’t know him that well and had forgotten his name. So, as we were walking and talking about this one afternoon in DC, I said something like: “So… Chris, Bob, Bill… What’s his name again?” She stopped dead in her tracks and, with shock at my forgetfulness, she turned to me and said with unexpected conviction and emotion: “Chris, Bob, Bill! He’s only the love of my life!” Jean knew from that day forward that this one, Pat, was “the one”. They have been happily married for several years now and are raising several beautiful children in a Christ-centered, love-filled Catholic home.

Have you come to that point of conviction about Christ?

Hopefully you too can say, with great love, to anyone who asks you who Jesus Christ is, including Christ Himself…

“He is the love of my life!”  “You are the love of my life!”

I wish this love encounter for everyone in the world!

Nothing beats it. Nothing surpasses the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. And…

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:14-20)
